Media Development Program (MDP) announces the

Egypt Photojournalism Contest 2011

Deadline for Submissions December 15th, 2010

THEME—NEW VISIONS OF Egypt

This contest gives participants a chance to show their country through photographs that challenge the stereotypes, inform the news, share a view of daily life and tell stories that few would otherwise know. Images should go beyond the ordinary and we ask photographers to seek out a new, diverse and personal vision.

The contest is open to all Egyptian photojournalists living and working in Egypt. A photojournalist is defined for the purpose of this competition as: anyone who makes the majority of their income by producing images for news publications and agencies including websites, newspapers, magazines.

An exhibition and publication of all winning images will be launched at Photo Week 2011, a week long Photojournalism Festival to be held in Cairo from Jan 3-8^th 2011.

The Media Development Program is a USAID funded initiative.

An exhibition and publication of all winning images will be launched at Photo Week 2011, a weeklong Photojournalism Festival to be held in Cairo from Jan 3-8^th 2011.

CONTEST CATAGORIES

1) People (maximum 5 photographs)

2) News (maximum 5 photographs)

3) Photo Story (minimum 5 and maximum10 photographs)

AWARDS

Recipients of the 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd prizes in each category will receive priority placement at one of the MDP Photo Week 2 workshops to be held from Jan. 3^rd to 8^th, 2011. Award-winning photographers Michael Robinson Chavez and ShahidulAlam will lead the workshops.

All of the winning images will be published in a catalogue.

Winning photographers will receive 10 copies of the catalogue.

The winning photographs will also be exhibited publically during Photo Week 2.

Honorable Mention Certificates for 15 photographers whose work will also be included in an exhibition and a high-quality catalogue.

Photographers must submit their images in the following manner:

WHAT

Photographs must have been taken in the calendar year 2010. Photographers can enter all three categories. Strong individual images from the photo story may also be considered in the other categories if the jury decides. Photographs may be in color or black and white. Submitted images should be well exposed, sharp, well composed, and most importantly be visually interesting.

All photographic files must named precisely in the following manner:

Category Number followed a dash and then by the entry number.

For example:

The first image submitted in the People category would be named 1-1.jpeg, the second image would be 1-2.jpeg, etc.

The first image submitted in the News category would be named 2-1.jpeg.

Images in the Photo Story should be numbered in the order they would be published with the opening picture named 3-1.jpeg. Subsequent images would be labeled 3.2.jpeg, 3.3.jpeg, etc.

Photographers should use the maximum quality setting when saving files to JPEG.

Images must be 5MB in size or larger when opened.

Emailed images should not exceed 500K each.

No excessive photo altering in Photoshop or other software that alters the reality of the situation is allowed. Normal cropping, color and exposure correction are allowed. The original, un-cropped, full frame, as shot, digital file (or negative in the case of film) must be available for viewing on request of contest organizers.

WHEN

Submissions must be received by 5PM on December 15th, 2010.

Winners of the contest will be notified by December 25th, 2010

Xenia Nikolsk— Photographer and International Curator, in Sweden and Egypt.

By participating in this photo competition you agree to the entry rules, and to the following legal conditions:

All photographs must be the sole work of the entrant and by submitting to the contest the photographer acknowledges the acceptance of the of the contest rules.

Your entry to the contest imply your agreement to allow the photographs (and your name occupation and city) to be published as selected award winners in project publications and used for promotion of the MDP’s journalism training program in Egypt including, but not limited to, exhibitions, electronic collection of photographs, online photo features, and web pages providing information. Participants retain ownership and all rights to future use of their photographs. The MDP will credit and acknowledge the copyright of the author of the photograph in all its publications. By entering, participants warrant that his or her entry materials are original and do not infringe on any third party’s rights. By entering, participants release the MDP and the members of the jury from any liability for any incorrect information, loss, claim or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with the photo contest. The MDP shall have the right to verify; in it’s sole judgment, winner eligibility. Decisions of the MDP shall be final and binding.
