Manoocher Deghati began his career as a
photojournalist covering the political developments that led to the 1979
revolution in Iran. He worked for Agence France Press and for several
Iranian publications including Iranweel and Aftab. He soon became a
correspondent for Sipa Press and Black Star in Iran, publishing his work
in Newsweek, Time, and Life Magazine among others.
Over the years he has worked as correspondent and
also the director of Agence France Presse in Europe, Central America and
the Middle East only leaving the agency in 2002. In this same year he
co-founded and became director of the AINA Photojournalism Institute in
Kabul, Afghanistan. He currently lives in Nairobi where he helped to
create and now directs the Photo Unit for UN -OCHA/IRIN, the United
Nations humanitarian News Agency. Manoocher Deghati taught for the
World Press Master Class in both Amsterdam and Cairo.
This six-day
workshop with Manoocher Deghati
is designed for serious amateur and professional photojournalists. The
workshop will be divided between class time and time spent
photographing. Deghati will begin by sharing his own work and years of
experience with the group. He will spend time discussing what is
involved in image making and the importance of developing one’s eye and
particular style. He will also address the many other issues that effect
working photojournalists: Risks and what to be aware of when working in
delicate and dangerous situations and places; the importance of being a
committed journalist and what that entails; the “market” and the various
outlets for documentary photographers and journalists today.
In this workshop you
will be encouraged to photograph daily. If needed a list of story ideas
will be provided on the first day. Deghati will lead intense group
editing and critiquing sessions based on the daily work. This workshop
is open to the use of Digital only. Each participant should be prepared
to come to the each day’s session with the previous days’ selection of
images in hand so that it can be looked at and edited as a group. By
the end of the workshop each of you should have produced a small body of
work on a specific subject matter that can be curated into a public
projection.

Sheryl Mendez
is both a photo editor and a photographer. She is one of the founding
members of The Crimes of War Project, the photography editor and
researcher on the book, Crimes of War: What the Public Should Know
(W.W. Norton & Co., New York/London. 1999 and 2006). She worked
for Magnum Photos as the editor of story development and was the New
York bureau’s editor of photography for US News & World Report. As a
photographer her work has been published in the London Sunday Times
magazine, Nouvel Observateur, The Christian Science Monitor, The
Washington Post, ABC News, Associated Press, Maghreb Daily, News 24
South Africa, Electronic New Paper (Singapore), Jamaica Observer, The
San Francisco Examiner, The Bangladesh Observer, and Daylight magazine
among others. Sheryl Mendez has
taught workshops on photography and photo editing in the United States,
Syria and Spain.
This five-day
workshop with Sheryl Mendez
is open to both photographers and photo editors
looking to build upon editing skills.
Its purpose is to help photographers and editors explore the narrative,
aesthetic, and emotional aspects of image making and bringing those
images to the page. To understand that the best photographs work on many
levels: the historical, sociological, emotional, as well as the
aesthetic.
If you are a
photographer, you too need to be able to convey why one image is more
suitable than another or why a photograph should be used in a
publication rather than an illustration. Your work does not stop after
you finish shooting, often the real test comes when you need to
find the language to
convince others that your photography edit is worth their time and their
pages. Photo editors are negotiators. As a photo editor you are the
person who most effectively needs to convey photographs significance
to your editors.
You are the channel or conduit for a photographer so that they can
achieve images that are compelling.
Using the work of
numerous photographers and their different approaches to image making
Mendez will encourage the group to explore what it means to 'see'.
Participants will discover and strengthen their own original vision (as
photographers) and broaden the way they think about photography (as
editors).
There will be no
photographing in this workshop. The photographers in this workshop
should bring a portfolio of their best work to the first day.

workshop is designed for photographers and photo editors. Applicants

عمل مع وكالة
الأنباء الفرنسية (أ .إف.بي) كما عمل مع العديد من المطبوعات الإيرانية
كـإيران وييل, أفتاب. سرعان ما أصبح مراسلًا لــسيبا بريس وبلاك ستار
بإيران, كما نشرت أعماله في نيوزويك, تايم, لايف ضمن مجلات أخرى.
عمل كمراسل كما
عمل كمدير لـوكالة الأنباء الفرنسية في أوروبا, الشرق الأوسط وأمريكا
الوسطى ليترك المنصب عام 2002.
بنفس العام ساعد
في إنشاء وترأس معهد التصوير الصحفي أنينا بمدينة كابول بأفغانستان.
يقيم حاليًا
بــنيروبي حيث ساعد في إنشاء وأصبح لاحقًا مدير لـمركز التصوير بـالوكالة
الإنسانية الإخبارية التابعة للأمم المتحدة.
قام ديجاتي
بالتدريس في دورة أساتذة الصحافة بالقاهرة وأمستردام.
ورشة العمل التي
ستستغرق 6 أيام مع ديجاتي
مصممة للجادين من هواة ومحترفي التصوير الفوتغرافي. سيتم تقسيم الورشة ما
بين الدراسة والتصوير. سيبدء ديجاتي بمشاركة أعماله ونتاج خبراته مع
المشاركين. سيناقش ديجاتي العوامل التي تدخل في صناعة الصورة وأهمية تنمية
عين المصور وتطوير أسلوبه الخاص. سيناقش كذلك الجوانب الأخرى العديدة التي
تؤثر على المصورين الصحفييم أثناء عملهم, المخاطر وما يجب الإنتباه له
أثناء العمل في مواقف وأماكن خطرة ودقيقة, أهمية أن تكون صحفي ملتزم وما
يعنيه ذلكك, السوق والفرص المتاحة أمام المصوريين التسجيلين والصحفيين
اليوم.
ستم تشجيع
المشاركين على إلتقاط الصور بشكل يومي. ستم عرض قائمة بالأفكار في اليوم
الأول إذا ما دعت الضرورة.
سيقود ديجاتي
جلسات تنسيق ونقد للصور التي سيتم إلتقاطها يوميًا. ستقوم الورشة على
إستخدام تقنية الديجيتال فقط.
سيتوجب على
المشاركين أن يحضروا معهم أعمال اليوم السابق حتي يتم معاينتها وتنسيقها
بين المجموعة المشاركة.
بنهاية الورشة,
سيجد المشاركين إنتاج خاص بموضوع معين و سيمكنهم عرضه فيما بعد.

ورشة العمل التي
ستستغرق 5 أيام مع شيريل مينديز
ستكون متاحة
للمصورين ومصححي الصور الذين يطمحون في تنمية مهارات تصحيح الصور.
تهدف الورشة لمساعدة المشاركين على إكتشاف الجوانب القصصية, الجمالية
والعاطفية في صناعة الصورة وجلب تلك الصور للعرض. توصيل أن أفضل
المصورين يعملن على أكثر من مستوى: تاريخي, إجتماعي, عاطفي بالإضافة إلى
الجانب الجمالي.
إذا كنت مصور
فوتوغرافي وتريد معرفة لماذا هناك صورة ملائمة أكثر من الأخرى أو لما تختار
تلك الصورة في مطبوعة ولا تختارها لرسم إيضاحي. لا يتوقف عمل المصور بعد
إلتقاط الصورة, غالبًا ما يأتى الإختبار الحقيقي حين يتحتم عليك إيجاد لغة
مناسبة لإقناع الأخرين أن صورك تستحق وقتهم ونشرها بمطبوعتهم. مصححي الصور
هم مفاوضون.
كمصحح صور عليك
بإقناع المحررين بأهمية صورك, أنت قناة ووسيط المصور لوصول إلى النتيجة
التي يرجونها.
بإستخدام أعمال
لمصورين عدة لكل منهم مدخله الفني الخاص, ستقوم منديز بتشجيع المشاركين على
تعلم "الرؤية".
سيقوم المشاركين
بإكتشاف وتقوية رؤيتهم الخاصة (كمصورين) وسيقوموا بتوسيع أفاقهم فيما يخص
التصوير ( كمصححي صور).
لن يكون هناك
تصوير فوتغرافي في هذه الورشة.
سيتحتم على
المشاركين إحضار مجموعة من أفضل أعمالهم في أول يوم من الورشة.
