Egypt’s Pioneering Heart Transplant Surgeon Tells His Story: Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub on “Search of Excellence” a Public Lecture at American University in Cairo

John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement of the American University in Cairo (AUC) hosts today a public lecture by Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub. The world famous heart surgeon will speak on scientific achievement and giving back to others in a lecture titled “In Search of Excellence”.

The Egyptian-born Professor has achieved recognition as a cardiothoracic surgeon as well as a philanthropist contributing to save the lives of children with heart defects. He has preformed more heart transplant surgeries than any other surgeon in the world, with a record of 2000 heart transplant operations and over 350 heart-lung transplants. He also performed the UK’s first heart-lung transplant in 1983. Sir Magdi believes that medicine is not only about curing but it is also about improving the quality of life. It is no surprise that Guinness World Records’ longest surviving heart transplant patient Derrick Morris (UK) was operated on by Sir Magdi in 1980.

While fulfilling his duties as a Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, Sir Magdi remains keen on developing health services and scientific research. He is the Founder and Director of Research at the Harefield Heart Science Centre. "I think my achievements have been made possible by fully believing that I am fortunate to deal with the two things I love: alleviating suffering and discovering science”, he said recently. In Egypt, Sir Magdi serves as a member of the Supreme Council for Scientific and Technological Research.

In 2009, Sir Magdi launched an ambitious project in Egypt; the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation (MYF). MYF is an NGO to support medical research and to raise funds for the Aswan Heart Center in Upper Egypt.  The Aswan Heart Centre provides much-needed cardiovascular surgery and treatment for children and adults. The services are free to those who cannot afford to pay for them.

AUC President David D. Arnold noted that AUC recognized Sir Magdi Yacoub’s pioneering work with an Honorary Degree in spring 1989. He also added: “Sir Magdi’s speech today will give our students fresh insights on his achievements in both medical and social development..”

Gerhart Center Director, Dr. Barbara Ibrahim said: “We are hosting Sir Magdi today not only as a great scientist and healer, but also because he represents the best tradition of  distinguished philanthropy in Egypt.”

This public lecture is aligned with the Gerhart Center’s vision to “strengthen the culture of philanthropy in the Arab region”.

الجراح المصراى الرائد فى زراعة القلب يروى قصة نجاحه

الأستاذ الدكتور مجدى يعقوب يلقى محاضرة عامة تحت عنوان البحث عن التميز بالجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة

يستضيف مركز جون جرهارت للعطاء الإجتماعى والمشاركة المدنية بالجامعة الأمريكية اليوم الأستاذ الدكتور مجدى يعقوب فى محاضرة عامة عنوانها البحث عن التميز. سوف يتحدث الجراح العالمى الأشهر عن الإنجاز العلمى والعطاء.

حظى الدكتور مجدى بالتقدير ليس لتميزه فى مجال جراحة القلب فحسب بل أيضاً لعمله الإجتماعى والإنسانى وسعيه لإنقاذ حياة العديد من الأطفال الذين ولدوا بعيوب خلقية فى القلب. قام الدكتور مجدى بإجراء أكبر عدد من عمليات زراعة القلب مقارنة بجراحى القلب حول العالم حيث سجل عدد 2000 عملية زراعة قلب وأكثر من 350 عملية زراعة قلب ورئة. وكان أول من قام بعملية زراعة قلب والرئة فى المملكة المتحدة عام 1983. يؤمن الدكتور مجدى إيماناً قوياً بأن الطب لا يقتصر على العلاج بل يمتد لتحسين نوعية حياة الفرد. كان ديريك موريس أحد مرضى الذين خضعوا لعملية زراعة قلب على يد الدكتور مجدى يعقوب وذلك فى عام 1980وسجل موريس فى موسوعة حينيس للأرقام القياسية حيث أنه عاش أطول مدة بعد إجراء العملية مقارنة بالمرضى الأخرين الذين خضعوا للعملية نفسها .

بينما يمارس الأستاذ الدكتور مجدى مهامه كأستاذ جراحة قلب بالمعهد القومى للقلب والرئة بجامعة إمبيريال فى لندن يظل حريصاً على أن يساهم فى تطوير الخدمة والأبحاث الطبية حيث يرأس حالياً قسم البحث العلمى فى مركز هارفيلد لعلوم القلب. يقول الدكتور مجدى: أعتبر نفسى محظوظأ لأنى أعمل ما أحب وهو رفع المعاناة عن الأخرين والإكتشافات العلمية مما ساعدنى على تحقيق كل ما قمت به. أما فى مصر فالدكتور مجدى عضو المجلس الأعلى للأبحاث العلمية والتكنولوجية.

قام الدكتور مجدى عام 2008 بتدشين مشروع طموح وهو مؤسسة مجدى يعقوب لأمراض وأبحاث القلب وهى مؤسسة أهلية تهتم بالبحث العلمى فى مجال أمراض القلب وتقوم فى الوقت ذاته بتمويل أنشطة مركز أسون للقلب عن طريق جمع التبرعات. يقدم مركز أسوان خدماته الصحية المجانية للأطفال وللفئات العمرية الأخرى خاصة المرضى الأكثر إحتياجاً.

 

أوضح رئيس الجامعة الأمريكية داﭭيد أرنولد إن الجامعة الأمريكية قد منحت الأستاذ الدكتور مجدى يعقوب الدكتوراه الفخرية لعمله الرائد في مجال زراعة القلب والرئة فى ربيع 1989. ثم أضاف: "سوف يطلعنا الدكتور مجدى خلال محاضرة اليوم على أوجه جديدة من انجازته العلمية والإجتماعية على حد سواء."

تقول د باربره إبراهيم مدير مركز جرهارت "إننا نستضيف الإستاذ الدكتور مجدى يعقوب اليوم ليتحدث لنا ليس فقط كعالم وطبيب بل أيضاً لكونه مثالاً متميزاً للعطاء فى مصر."

تأتى هذه المحاضرة فى إطار رؤية مركز جرهارت بأن يعمل على تعزيز ثقافة العطاء الإجتماعى فى المنطقة العربية
