John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement is a university-based institution offering resources for the promotion of philanthropy and civic engagement in the Arab region. Established in 2006, the Center aims to further the American University in Cairo's mission to advance social responsibility and active citizenship.

 

The Center’s mission is to enhance the culture of giving and social responsibility in the Arab region. The Gerhart Center strengthens institutional philanthropy through research, building leadership capacity, and providing tailored peer learning and other support services to philanthropic institutions in the region. The Center also works with the private sector to promote and apply the principles of Corporate Sustainability Management to enhance effective social responsibility.

In 2010 the Center launched the Muslim Philanthropy Digital Library (MPDL), to make widely available a repository of the world’s knowledge on all forms of philanthropy through original documents, reports, graphics, waqf registrations, and scholarly analysis in Muslim-majority countries and Muslim communities worldwide. A major translation project, the Arab Encyclopedia on Philanthropy is an on-line resource that features Arabic translations of key international documents to guide effective grant-making, corporate philanthropy, and more impactful institutional giving.

 

The Center’s vision is to strengthen the culture and effectiveness of philanthropy in the Arab region Toward that end the Center sponsors a network of Arab universities, the Ma‘an Alliance, whose presidents have committed to making civic engagement a core institutional value. The Center encourages community based learning (CBL) in higher education, as a fundamental approach to effective teaching and it fosters social innovation through student leadership programs, and seminars for young professionals. The Center sponsors the Student Leaders for Service Program (SLS) which empowers undergraduate students by offering them guided opportunities to expand their skills in leadership and strategic philanthropy while encouraging greater civic engagement at AUC.

 

On the AUC campus, the Gerhart Center acts as a catalyst for civic initiatives such as volunteer language tutoring for workers, diversity awareness events, and sponsors public lectures by inspirational figures such as Queen Rania al Abdulla of Jordan and Sir Magdi Yacoub, a pioneering Egyptian heart surgeon and philanthropist.

مركز جون جرهارت للعطاء الإجتماعى والمشاركة المدنية

 

مركز جون جرهارت للعطاء الإجتماعى والمشاركة المدنية مؤسسة تابعة للجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة. يسعى المركز إلى تعزيز العطاء الإجتماعى والمشاركة المدنية العالم العربي. أنشأ المركز عام 2006 ويهدف إلى العمل على تحقيق رسالة الجامعة ومهمتها عن طريق النهوض بالمسؤولية الاجتماعية وتعزيز المواطنة النشطة.

 

وتتمثل مهمة المركز في تقديم المعرفة وتوفير المصادر التى تهاهم فى تعزيز ثقافة العطاء والمسؤولية الاجتماعية في المنطقة العربية يدعم المركز العطاء الإجتماعى المؤسسى من خلال الأبحاث وبناء القدرات القيادية وتقديم برامج تدريب التعلم من الأقران . يقدم المركز خدماته أيضاً للقطاع الخاص لتطوير والتطبيق مبادئ التنمية المستدامة فى الشركات وتعزيز المسؤلية الإجتماعية بها.

 

فى عام 2010 بدأ المركز مشروع المكتبة الرقمية للعطاء الاجتماعي في المجتمعات الإسلامية التى تسعى لإتاحة مخزون معرفي عالمي حول العطاء الاجتماعي بكافة أشكاله، ويشمل ذلك الوثائق الأصلية والتقارير ورسوم الجرافيك والتسجيلات الوقفية والتحليلات العلمية في الدول ذات الأغلبية المسلمة والمجتمعات الإسلامية حول العالم.هناك أيضاً الموسوعة العربية للعطاء الاجتماعي التى تعتبر مصدراً إلكترونياً للمعلومات التي تعني بمبادئ وممارسات العطاء الاجتماعي الفعالة. فهي تضم ترجمة عربية لوثائق هامة من قبل عدد من المنظمات الداعمة للعطاء الاجتماعي بأوروبا وشمال أمريكا، التي تلقي الضوء على العديد من الدروس والمعلومات.

 

تمثل رؤية المركز فى تعزيز ثقافة العطاء والمسؤولية الاجتماعية ولذلك فإنه يرعى شبكة من الجامعات العربية التى التزم رؤساءها بجعل المشاركة المدنية قيمة أساسية مؤسسية. . ويشجع المركز التعلم المبنى على الخدمة الإجتماعية كجزء أساسى من التعليم العالى ، ونهج أساسي للتدريس الفعال بالإضافة إلى تعزيز الابتكار الاجتماعي من خلال برامج القيادة الطلابية ، وحلقات دراسية للمهنيين الشباب

 

يتولى المركز بعض الانشطة داخل الجامعة مثل التطوع لتدريس العمال بالجامعة ، ويرعى المركز المحاضرات العامة التى يلقيها شخصيات ملهمة مثل الملكة رانيا عبد الله من الاردن ود. مجدى يعقوب ، جراح القلب المصري الرائد.الذى يعنى باعطاء الإجتماعى. يعززالمركز العمل الخيري المؤسسي من خلال البحوث وبناء القدرات القيادية ، وتوفير تعلم بين الأقران وغيرها من خدمات الدعم لمؤسسات العطاء في المنطقة العربية. ويعمل المركز أيضا مع القطاع الخاص لتعزيز وتطبيق مبادئ الاستدامة لتحسين المسؤولية الاجتماعية الفعالة.

 

تشكل المحاضرات العامة جزءاً مهماً من أنشطة المركز حيث أنها تشكل أداة لتحفيز المشاركة المدنية والعطاء الإجتماعى . تجتذب تلك المحاضرات الطلاب والأساتذة الجامعيين من داخل وخارج الجامعة الأمريكية بالإضافة إلى رجال الأعمال والشركاء الحاليين
